Genius bread

Having tried white genius sliced bread and finding it light and easy to digest, I went on to Genius brown bread.....OMG what a reaction, tummy bloating, gripes, constipation followed by running to the loo, and lethargy.

Now what is the difference , if anyone can tell me I would be gratefull, I cannot find anything on the label to suggest Gluten or wheat !

Hi Maryelle - there is a difference in ingredients. According to their site the list for white Genius is:

Water, Tapioca Starch, Rice Flour, Potato Starch, Rapeseed Oil, Maize Starch, Psyllium Husk Powder, Humectant (Vegetable Glycerine), Sugar, Stabiliser (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose), Dried Egg White, Yeast, Flax Seeds, Salt, Flavouring, Rice Starch, Preservative (Calcium Propionate).

brown Genius is:

Water, Tapioca Starch, Rice Flour, Potato Starch, Rapeseed Oil, Maize Starch, Psyllium Husk Powder, Treacle, Humectant (Vegetable Glycerine), Stabiliser (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose), Dried Egg White, Yeast, Salt, Millet Flakes, Flax Seeds, Sugar Beet Fibre, Caramelised Sugar Syrup, Rice Starch, Preservative (Calcium Propionate), Flavouring.

So there is a slight variation.

What the problem with the loaf may be is the Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose - this is known for fermenting in the large intestine - it comes under the E number of E464 - it is obtained from wood/plant fibres. Some people experience bloating and either constipation and/or diarrhoea.

I wondered also if there may be problems with the content of Caramelised Sugar Syrup - not sure of the source as it doesn't say - may be someone else knows more about what type of grain/vegetable this may come from.

Hi Maryelle, this has come up a few times on another forum and the basic bread recipe is the same, with 3 extra ingredients: millet flakes, beet fibre and caramelised sugar syrup.

Many coeliac have a reaction to millet flakes but it could also be the extra fibre in the beet fibre. Apparently millet flakes can have up to 20ppm because of contamination from the milling rolling process and fibre is food that is passed through the body and aids bowel movements (roughage) And their basic bread recipe already contains flax seeds which are also roughage. And caramelised sugar syrup is basically made from sucrose can have a laxative effect on some people.

I think the main thing is that you know that you have a reaction to it and your body likes the white bread so if you have a reaction to other gf foods check for millet flakes etc. And you are not alone in having a reaction to the brown bread.

Believe me I am going to stay away from all the brown GF breads and rolls.

I had a similar reaction although not so sevre with warberton.

Hi,Psyllium Husk Powder is a fibre compound which can have a laxative side effect. I found this out when I went looking to find out what it was. Also, in my researching I discovered that Genius bread has fat per 100g ranging from 7.4g (their new lighter bread) to 15.2g fat in the seeded bread which can also have an effect on the frequency of needing to go. I hadn't even looked at the other ingredients......I think I want to stick to Juvela with it's 2.6g of fat and none of these other things...just codex. I had enough bloating, pain and running to the loo prior to being diagnosed and don't want to go back there.

i had a reaction the other day did'nt know what caused it, i did eat genius brown bread for the first time so cheers i think i found the culprit

I have been ill for 3 months now and have been eating the brown Genius bread daily , I am going to stop now and wait and see if things improve !

Even when I eat a GF pizza base or bread I get pains and bloating, except Genius brand.
